
Al - Azhar Maha Vidyalaya in Gallalella village of Polonnaruwa district was started on 16.08.1910 with 30 students and one teacher. But it has been mentioned in some notes that it started earlier.
As an important milestone in the school, the G.C.E. (A/L) exam was started for the first time in the year 1963. After that, two children appeared for this exam and one of them passed. This first student is currently working as a teacher. One of student passed the Grade 05 scholarship exam for the first time in 1985 and he is currently working as a health officer.
Since 1997, in this college where there is a severe shortage of teachers, we have been able to make children pass the G.C.E. (A/L) exam. The retired principal Mr. M.M. Jamin made great efforts to develop this college. Mr. Jamin passed the G.C.E. (A/L) and for the first time in the year 2008, the percentage of students who passed the G.C.E. (A/L) examination was 100% and three of them were selected for the university.
Informed that currently, there are 848 children and 39 teachers in this school. Since recently, this school has participated in various subject activities such as sports competitions, Tamil language competitions, and etc. To make this school a complete school, the currently working A. Iqbar principal and teaching staff are working very diligently and dedicatedly.
